With all the rain we've got some funky fungus going on in our front yard. Caleb found these growing at the base of a maple tree. They are called "Dead Man's Fingers" Isn't that great? They feel leathery and come away easily in one's hand (spookier and spookier) The latin name is Xylaria polymorpha (Ascomycota)

My mother is German and shared with us all sorts of unusual sayings. One was that, if you hit your parent, your hands will grow out of your grave. Hmmm.....
