Winter, from the Tacuinum Sanitatis
"Wind's in the east, mist coming in.
Like somethin' is brewin' and bout to begin.
Can't put me finger on what lies in store,
But I fear what's to happen all happened before."  --Mary Poppins

Laurie, I wrote down tweaked recipes for red beans and cornbread in my captain idea log for New Years Day. It seems a fitting thing for a southerner to do.

Speaking of "wind in the east"--Dickens used that in Bleak House. So, now I'm wondering about the history of that phrase in literature.

Happy thoughts and happy new year!

Hi Tammy,

It was Korean food for us last night...a nod to our family History and beginning again, but it will be rice and beans tonight for all my southern friends.

I love the idea of the East wind....bringing quite a blizzard today. I didn't know about the Dickens reference. Do you think it was a saying, like "red sky at night, sailor's delight?"

Mr. Jarndyce uses that phrase when he is in a foul mood (and being the truly kind man that he is, it is only when thoroughly provoked).

“She means well,” said Mr Jarndyce, hastily. “The wind’s in the east.”

“It was in the north, sir, as we came down,” observed Richard.

“My dear Rick,” said Mr Jarndyce, poking the fire, “I’ll take an oath it’s either in the east, or going to be. I am always conscious of an uncomfortable sensation now and then when the wind is blowing in the east.”

Plus note that Christ will return in the East.

    Virtual Life?

A wee explanation: this website was created as a way to amplify the daily surprise of seeing glory in one small life.  The notebook entries represented here are all selected from things actually lived and noted on paper in an effort to live the full life British educator Charlotte Mason so ably championed.
